Jules Bloomenthal

Academic Record

Jules Bloomenthal holds a doctorate in computer science from the University of Calgary and a masters in computer science from the University of Utah. He is president of Unchained Geometry, which develops geometric modeling and character animation tools.

Soundstream, Inc, Salt Lake City, UT
1975-1981: helped develop the company's digital tape recorder, then directed its digital audio services that during 1978-1981 engineered the majority of classical digital recordings worldwide.

Books

Introduction to Implicit Surfaces (J. Bloomenthal, ed.), Morgan Kaufmann Publishers, 1997.

Dissertation, Thesis, Chapters and Course Notes

Skeletal Design of Natural Forms, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Calgary, 1995.

This dissertation examines the use of inner structure to represent and articulate complex, natural forms. Contributions include analysis of convolution applied to skeletons and new methods for the addition of surface detail, control of surface bulging, and the combination of parametric and implicit surfaces.

Reconstruction of Three-Dimensional Surfaces from Two-Dimensional Projections, Masters Thesis, University of Utah, 1981.

This thesis introduced a technique to reconstruct three-dimensional shapes from photographs, one of the first demonstrations of ‘photometric stereo.’
